In 1976, the Arboretum Society hired an architectural firm to draw schematics for the new arboretum. Then, contractors were awarded $621,000 to begin construction. The formal groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 11, 1977, and the arboretum opened to the public on October 21, 1979. Here are some facts about the arboretum. In 1978, the city of Fullerton, California, incorporated the Arboretum, an urban garden in the area. The 1.2-acre property was once a diseased orange grove, and was transformed into organic garden plots in the 1970s. The Arboretum’s centerpiece is the 1894 Heritage House, which once belonged to Fullerton pioneer physician Dr. George C. Clark. The house was relocated to its current location in 1972.
